When looking at the overall picture of last year’s Art Basel Miami 2012, we identified two major art themes, text based work and boxy geometric art. This year it appears that most of the text based art has disappeared,
however it appears that geometric work has only gathered momentum. Art Basel 2013 seemed to draw inspiration from much of the abstract expressionism from the 50s as well as minimalism from the ensuing decades.
Although the ghosts of Donald Judd and Carl Andre were present, it appeared that 2013 dropped much of the rigidity of the Russian Constructivists and presented more organic rectangle forms along the (ragged) lines of Rothko.
The geometric works tended towards woven craft work often referencing or incorporating actual textiles rather than rigid computer pixels.
In fact this concept of assemblages could be considered a sub theme as Rauschenburg was also a clear point of reference.
With these themes in mind, it appears that Sadie Coles has scored the trifecta with the No More Words work above by Sam Durant and the floor based geometric assemblage with woven mats by Brazilian artist Adriano Costa.
