Street artists are often charged with vandalism and the destruction of public property. However, in a strange twist of fate, it is now the building owners who are being accused of destroying public property as plumbers working on a building in Melbourne have been accused of destroying one of Banksy’s Parachuting Rats believed to be worth thousands of dollars. There is now a growing movement among certain communities who no longer see street art as an eyesore, but rather part of their cultural heritage, something which many believe should be preserved and protected. Wouldn’t it be ironic to eventually see building owners prosecuted for destroying street art?
