Christophe Avella-Bagur at Galerie RichardChristophe Avella-Bagur’s Floating Souls at Galerie Richard presents a series of paintings by the French artist which consist of facial images projected or merged onto perfect human forms or mannequins. The result is a creepy facial mash-up where the human brain short circuits attempting to discern familiar facial patterns. After some moments the viewer’s brain is able to distinguish the flesh colored facial projection on the grisaille generic human forms, however the combined faces create something that is both alien and grotesque. Avella-Bagur’s work can be compared to that of Tony Oursler where his facial projections onto unexpected forms create something which is both humanly familiar and alien at the same time.
