Nancy Davidson’s Dustup at Betty Cunningham is a humorous look at the American cowgirl. Her large inflatable circuslike sculptures reference Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen with a distinct abstract twist.
Davidson was awarded a Creative Capital grant in 2005 and used it to explore the myth of the American cowgirl especially within the rodeo setting. Fascinated with the costumes and fanfare as well as the pageantry which can border on absurd, Davidson reinterpreted some of this imagery into her satirical candy coated Betty Boop Carnivaleyes and her tasselled and cowgirl booted everlasting gobstopper inflatables. The results are half WPRA (Women’s Professional Rodeo Association) and half cowgirl Minnie Mouse levity.
