Antoni Tàpies, the Catalan painter from Barcelona whose work covered many different styles over the 20th century has died at age 88.   Tàpies delved into Primitivism, Surrealism, Dadaism, Arte Povera, and Minimalism over his illustrious career while remaining distinctly Catalan in his painting.  His work always had a strong connection to his homeland and the earth in general. Throughout the 20th century he was an active aprticipant in the contemporary art scene befriending European artists ranging from Picasso and Braque to Dali and Dubuffet as well as Americans such as Motherwell and de Kooning.  In 1984, he created the Fundació Antoni Tàpies with his wife Teresa in Barcelona which houses a large number of works that the couple has donated over the years.  A detailed biography of  Tàpies can be found on the foundation’s website.
