Variety is reporting that Antonio Banderas has signed on to play the legendary Spanish painter in the film 33 dias (33 days) which is the number of days that it took Picasso to paint his legendary work.  It will be directed by Carlos Saura and filmed in Spanish and French. Filming will start in Paris in 2013 with a budget of 6 million euros.  The film promises to continue the recent darker more brooding roles for Banderas who was excellent as the creepy doctor Robert Ledgard in Pedro Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In as the film will be set against the Spanish Civil war and the bombing of Guernica and focus on Picasso’s relationship with Dora Maar which has been documented in his biographies and  paintings as somewhat tortuous.  It is said that when Picasso met Maar in a cafe, she was stabbing a knife into the table between her gloved fingers as blood trickled out of her glove from several miscalculations.  Do I sense an opening scene?

Banderas says that Picasso “is a character that has pursued me for a long time and I always rejected. He deserves a lot of respect because I am from Malaga, and I was born four blocks from where he was born.”
