Gulumbu Yunupingu the prominent Australian Aboriginal artist recently passed away. She was women’s leader from the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory of Australia and considered a guardian of many Aboriginal traditions from artwork to language.  Her works were massive both in scale and concept as she mixed many traditional techniques and theories with a modern elements.  In 2012, her painting on wood titled Garrurru (Sail), weighing a ton and measuring seven by three meters, was installed at the Australian National University in Canberra. In 2004 her painting on wooden poles titled Garak (Universe) won the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award.  It is shown and described in the video clip below.
