American artist Ken Price has passed away at age 77. Price was best known for his colorful sculptures that were somewhat of a hybrid between traditional ceramics and painting as his process entailed painting successive layers of acrylic paint on his fired ceramic pieces and then sanding them for a colorful mottled effect. However, Price also produced an array illustrations, most recently landscapes and volcanoes as well as humorous erotic art in the 70s and 80s somewhat similar to that of Steve Gianakos which can be seen on his website www.kenprice.com. Artlyst reported,
Price had just completed preparations for a 50-year retrospective, scheduled to open at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art this autumn, and travel on to the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
So while most reports describe Price as a well respected, but relatively unkown artist, this should change over the next year as he will be well represented on both coasts.
