ralph mcquarrie obituaryRalph McQuarrie, the designer whose creations for the Star Wars universe are permanently etched in the minds and imaginations of Sci-fi fans all over the world recently passed away at age 82. McQuarrie who brought the world of Tatooine to life and spawned the genesis  of the characters Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO created a lexicon of futuristic characters who were certainly antecedents for most of the Sci-fi films and video games that have been created in the past 30 years.  McQuarrie is also credited with creating the spaceship in Stephen Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In his obituary in the Hollywood Reporter, George Lucas states,

Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars. His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, “Do it like this.”
