While many in the world of art and money are awaiting Sotheby’s auction this evening where a version of Munch’s Scream is expected to go anywhere from $80 to $200 millon, Christie’s put together a solid Impressionist and Modern sale last evening with the total $117.1 million within the estimates of $90.5 – 130.2 million. The relatively small sale of 31 lots had only 3 lots fail to find bidders. A unique watercolor by Cezanne of a Card Player was the top lot at $19.1 million after the work came to market in light of the Qatari Government recently paying a whopping $250 million for a painted version of the Card Player series. A colourful Matisse still life Les Pivoines also fetched $19.1 million. Some nice Picassos and a painting by Monet of haystacks rounded out the top lots.
