Bloomberg has reported that Holbein’s Darmstadt Madonna which was previously on loan to the Städelschen Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt since 2004 has been sold to the German billionaire screw industrialist Reinhold Würth for over $70 million, making it the most expensive painting ever sold in Germany. Würth who has a large personal collection that he displays in his many museums will place the painting in his old masters collection just outside of Stuttgart.  Würth admits that he has overpaid for works in the past, however he is quite happy that he jumped at this once in a lifetime opportunity.
